Books for other Publishers

Thursday, 6 October 2005

I’ve contributed to a number of books for other publishers as well as Once While Travelling, the recently published ‘Lonely Planet Story’ with Penguin/Viking Australia:

So why didn’t Lonely Planet publish the Lonely Planet Story? Because it would have been too much like an advert, we decided that to produce something honest and unbiased it had to be published by another publisher. At the moment that means Penguin Books Australia – Once While Travelling is on sale in bookshops in Australia and New Zealand but not anywhere else in the world. It is, however, available internationally right here, from this website.

This collection of travel stories from Salon.com’s on line magazine included stories by Isabel Allende to Pico Iyer, Tim Cahill to Simon Winchester as well as my piece about why Australian suffer from ‘terminal wanderlust’.

Yes, I contributed to a Rough Guide in 2005. Mark Ellingham, one of Rough Guides’ founders, asked me if I’d put together a ‘Lonely Planet Playlist’ for a book subtitled ‘500 irresistible playlist ideas for your iPod or MP3 player.’ Putting together that list – which runs from a Chicago number in 1971 through to a KD Laing song in 2005 and includes the Joe Cocker track which gave Lonely Planet its name – inspired a few more playlists. I also put together the Paul Kelly (Australian singer-songwriter) list and the On the Road list but the one I really enjoyed selecting was the Put That Red Dress On (or take it off) playlist. Why are there so many songs where the singer instructs his girlfriend what she should be wearing?
