Charlie Hebdo, Hypocrisy & Saudi Arabia

Friday, 16 January 2015

As Marc Lynch, a professor at George Washington University, summed it up: ‘Glad so many world leaders could take time off jailing and torturing journalists and dissidents to march for free expression in France.’

Top of the list would have to be the Saudi Arabians – top of almost any list if hypocrisy comes into it in fact. While they’re piously speaking up for free speech they’re also flogging a blogger who had the temerity to speak out. Raif Badawi has been sentenced to receive 50 lashes every Friday for 20 weeks.

And then laugh at Saudi idiocy, the Saudi football team, currently in Australia for the Asian Cup, refused to get on a bus because the driver was female. Eventually they were convinced that outside Saudi Arabia women were not only allowed to drive cars they could even manage buses.
